SCC Matchplay - Charles in Semi-Final

14th December 2009

A quarter-final match saw 2008 runner up Charles Chan against Chris Frogley. Pine Ridge Golf Club was the venue, a course which both Charles and Chris have won on tour before, Chris is the 2008 champion.

1st Hole-Charles was the first to tee off, his shot went right into the edge of the treeline. Chris's tee shot also went right also into the treeline. Charles found himself in a bad lie, and had to play sidewards back onto the fairway. Chris had a better lie and played his second shot just short of the green. Charles's third shot came up just short of the green. Chris chipped onto the green and made a two putt for a 5. Charles's chip shot came to two feet and he holed out also for a 5.

2nd Hole- Charles's tee shot went again down the right side near the treeline. Chris's tee shot went far right and was a lost ball. Chris took three of the tee. Chris found himself in some heavy rough and could only manage to advance his ball several yards with his fourth shot. He played his fifth shot back onto the fairway. His sixth shot went again right, and landed under some trees. Charles found a decent lie with his tee shot and hit his second shot onto the edge of the green. Chris conceded the hole.

3rd Hole-Charles hit his tee shot onto the green. Chris's tee shot was short. He played his second which was too strong and found himself behind the green. Chris chipped back onto the green for three. Charles two putted for a par.

4th Hole-Chris has a shot on this hole. Charles hit his tee shot left this time, again close to the tree line. Chris hit his tee shot right also near the tree line.
Chris played his second shot which left him around 150 yards to the pin.
Charles's second shot found the front bunker. Chris's third was just short of the green. Both players chipped onto the green, Charles was on for three and Chris was on for four. Both players two putted.
Hole halved.
Charles 2 up.

5th Hole-Charles hit a very bad tee shot into the left hand treeline. Chris's tee shot went right, also close to the tree line.
Charles had to again play sidewards back onto the fairway. He then hit a bad third shot which left him around 150 yards to the green. Chris hit his second shot towards the 150 yard marker. Chris's third shot came up short of the green. Charles hit his fourth right of the green. Chris hit a bad fourth shot and was still short of the green. Both players chipped onto the green for five. Chris two putted for a seven. Charles had an opportunity to win the hole, but the putt came up short. Hole halved.
Charles 2 up.

6th Hole-Charles hit his tee shot short of the front bunker. Chris hit his tee shot right and short of the green. Both players chipped on for two. Chris 3 putted for a 5, but Charles 2 putted for a 4.

7th Hole-Charles hit his tee shot and found the fairway. Chris's tee shot went right and onto the eighth fairway. Chris played a great recovery shot back onto the seventh fairway. His third shot found the green. Charles's second was just short of the green. Charles chipped on, but could only manage a two putt for a five. Chris hit a fantastic long range putt for a tap in five. Hole halved.
Charles 3 up.

8th Hole-Charles hit his tee shot and again was close to the right hand treeline. Chris hit a bad tee shot and only advanced his ball around 100 yards. He hit a great second shot up the faiway. Charles's second was short and right of the green. Chris chipped on for four and Charles chipped on for three. Both players took two putts to finish the hole.
Charles 4 up.

Hole 9-Charles hit his tee shot down the fairway. Chris again pushed his tee shot right. Chris hit his second back onto the fairway. Charles hit his second down the faiway. Chris hit his third shot down the fairway. Charles hit his third onto the green. Chris hit his fourth onto the green. Both players had two putts to finish the hole.
Charles 5 up.

Hole 10-Chris has a shot on this hole. Charles hits his tee shot down the fairway.
Chris also hits his tee shot down the fairway. Chris's second shot comes up short of the green. Charles's second shot also comes up short of the green. Chris chips onto the green and two putts for a five. Charles chips on and one putt for a four. Hole halved.
Charles 5 up.

Hole 11-Charles hits his tee shot down the fairway. Chris hits his tee shot down the fairway. Chris's second shot finds the greenside bunker. Charles's second shot is just short of the green. Chris takes two shots to come out of the bunker and is on the green for four. Two putts later and Chris finishes the hole with a six. Charles has a chip and a putt for a four and wins the hole.
Charles 6 up.

Hole 12-Charles hits a bad tee shot and ends up left and far from the hole. Chris hits his tee shot down the fairway. Chris's second shot finds the green.
Charles hits his second shot badly and is short of the green. Charles chips on and is on the green for three. He two putts and and finishes the hole for a five. Chris has two putts to win the hole. His first putt comes up short, a two foot putt would give him the hole, however, he missed. Hole halved.
Charles 6 up.

Hole 13-Charles hits his tee shot up the fairway. Chris also hits his shot up the fairway. Chris second shot is short and right. Charles hits his second shot short of the green. Charles hits his chip shot to the back of the green. Chris's chip shot lands onto the front of the green. Both players are on the green for three. Chris was to putt first but was short. Charles had a downhill putt and it goes past by four feet. Chris missed his second putt and finishes with a six. Charles missed his putt back, but still finishes with a six, hole was halved and Charles wins the match.
Charles wins 6&5.

For the second year running Charles has reached the semi-finals. His next opponent will be Clive Strong.
